Marshall Sklare

1921–1992

Born in Chicago to parents of Lithuanian descent, Marshall Sklare was a third-generation American. His pioneering sociological studies of American Jews were among the first to consider Jewish life in America as a source of scholarly interest, and they defined the parameters of the field for decades. Sklare worked for the American Jewish Committee’s Division of Scientific Research, Yeshiva University, and the Princeton Theological Seminary before joining the faculty of Brandeis University in 1969. He remained at Brandeis until his retirement in 1990.
