1922–2018

Winnipeg-born writer Jack Ludwig lived most of his adult life in the United States, although his native city greatly influenced his work. With a doctorate in English literature from the University of California, Los Angeles, he taught at the University of Minnesota and State University of New York at Stony Brook and spent time as writer-in-residence at the University of Toronto. A close friend of Saul Bellow, he appeared as the character Valentine Gersbach in Bellow’s 1964 novel Herzog. Ludwig worked as a sportswriter in the 1960s and coedited the collection Soundings: New Canadian Poets (1971) with Andy Wainwright.
