Diego Viga
1907–1997
The son of a Viennese textile manufacturer, Diego Viga (pseudonym of Paul Engel) obtained a medical degree in Vienna. By 1934, conditions for Jews in Austria had deteriorated to the point that Viga migrated to Uruguay, although he returned in 1936 upon his marriage to Josefine Monath. After Germany annexed Austria, Viga left once more, this time to Bogotá, Colombia, where his extended family managed to join him in exile. In the 1940s, he began writing works in German and Spanish. In the 1950s, Viga and his family moved to Quito, Ecuador, where he continued writing essays and fiction. His literary works received awards in Ecuador and the German Democratic Republic.
