Larry Rivers

1923–2002
American painter, sculptor, printmaker, poet, and musician Larry Rivers began his career painting in the style of abstract expressionism but soon developed an iconoclastic figurative style, which many believe served as an inspiration for pop art. Among Rivers’s best-known works are his large historical canvases, including History of Matzoh, a three-part piece first exhibited at the Jewish Museum in New York City. His solo exhibitions include a major retrospective in 2002 at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
