Mathias Goeritz

1915–1990

German-born painter and sculptor Mathias Goeritz spent a significant part of his career working and teaching in Mexico. After earning a doctorate in philosophy and art history from Friedrich-Wilhelms Universität in 1940, Goeritz moved from Berlin to Morocco and then to Spain, where he cofounded the Escuela de Altamira in 1948. Ultimately, Goeritz settled in Mexico in 1949, teaching at the architecture school of the Universidad de Guadalajara. In Mexico, Goeritz immersed himself in the country’s artistic culture, creating the Museo Experimental “El Eco” in Mexico City, which operated from 1951 to 1953. During this time, Goeritz also produced numerous expressive, minimalist sculptures. He remained a tireless advocate of Mexican modern art throughout his life, continuously teaching, creating, and promoting the work of fellow artists.
