Grete Stern

1904–1999

The German photographer and graphic designer Grete Stern was the cofounder of the Berlin-based photography studio ringl + pit. Stern was a multidisciplinary artist, having studied music, graphic design, and photography, and she built a successful business with her friend and collaborator Ellen Auerbach. However, in 1934 Stern was compelled to leave Berlin. She established a photography studio in London before moving with her husband, photographer Horacio Coppola, to his native Argentina in 1935. In Buenos Aires, she taught photography and continued her photographic activity.
