Henryk Grynberg
b. 1936
Henryk Grynberg was born in Warsaw. He and his mother survived the Holocaust in hiding and on false papers. They remained in Poland after the war, and he became a journalist. In the late 1950s, Grynberg began writing autobiographical poems and short stories and became a member of the Warsaw State Jewish Theater. In 1967, while on a theatrical tour, he defected to the United States in response to Polish antisemitic propaganda and censorship. He has published more than twenty books of prose and poetry, most of which use biographical material, incorporating Jewish experiences during and after the Holocaust.
