Moisei Beregovskii

1892–1961

Folklorist and ethnomusicologist Moisei (Moshe) Iakovlevich Beregovskii was born in Ukraine. His father was a melamed. Beregovskii studied cello and vocal composition in the Kiev conservatories from 1915 to 1922. In 1927, he founded the Commission for Jewish Folk Music Research at the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences. Beregovskii became something of a wanderer; between 1929 and 1947 he collected more than two thousand field recordings from throughout Ukraine and the former Pale of Settlement. His collection was especially rich in Yiddish folk songs and purim-shpiln (Purim skits).
