Stefánia Mándy

1918–2001

Poet and art historian Stefánia Mándy was born in Budapest, where she studied humanities at the university. In 1944, she was deported to Auschwitz; her experiences there influenced the nature of her poetry, much of which was not allowed to be published during the communist regime in Hungary. After the war, Mándy taught at Pázmány Péter University. She received the Jószef Attila prize for poetry in 2001.
