Arthur Laurents

1917–2011

Playwright, screenwriter, and director Arthur Laurents (Levine) was born in Brooklyn. He wrote radio plays in the 1930s and, during World War II, training films and plays for army radio. Laurents adapted novels on Broadway and created screenplays in Hollywood. His films include Anastasia (1956) and Bonjour tristesse (1958), and his musicals include West Side Story (1957) and Gypsy (1959). He also directed the musicals I Can Get It for You Wholesale (1962) and La cage aux folles (1983) as well as wrote the film The Way We Were (1973).
