The Czech novelist, journalist, and screen writer Ivan Olbracht was the son of a Catholic writer and a mother who converted out of Judaism. Olbracht studied law in Berlin and Prague but became a journalist and fiction writer. He was active in the Communist Party and was highly critical of his government’s policies. His expulsion from the party led him to live in rural areas, and his works delve into psychological analyses of persons living in the countryside.
