Bulla of Gedalyahu

Late 6th Century BCE

Image
Round clay piece inscribed with Hebrew.
Bulla of Gedalyahu, Lachish. The text (bulla) reads: “Belonging to Gedalyahu, the Steward of the Palace.” This may be Gedaliah ben Ahikam, who was appointed governor of Judah by Nebuchadnezzar after the destruction of Jerusalem and was assassinated shortly thereafter (2 Kings 25:22–25; Jeremiah 40–41). It is assumed that earlier he had been the steward in charge of the royal palace, and that this bulla was stamped with the seal he used at that time.
