Isaac Lazarus Israëls

1865–1934

The Dutch impressionist Isaac Lazarus Israëls was the son of the much-respected and better-known painter Josef Israëls. Displaying precocious talent, he studied in The Hague and Amsterdam. In the course of his life he traveled widely, spending extended periods in Belgium’s mining districts, Paris, London, the French Rivera, India, and the Dutch East Indies, everywhere finding subjects for his work.
