What Is the Jewish Study Bible?

Adele Berlin is the Robert H. Smith Professor of Biblical Studies Emerita at the University of Maryland. Her main interests are biblical narrative and poetry, and the interpretation of the Bible. Best known among her works is The Jewish Study Bible (2004; revised edition, 2014), coedited with Marc Brettler, which won the National Jewish Book Award. Adele also served as editor in chief of the revised edition of The Oxford Dictionary of the Jewish Religion. She has written seven books, including the recently published commentary on Psalms 120–150 in the JPS Bible Commentary series, and over fifty articles. Her latest venture is a commentary on the Song of Songs. Adele has received numerous fellowships and honors. She is a fellow of the American Academy for Jewish Research and past president of the Society of Biblical Literature. In 2015 she was awarded an honorary degree, Doctor of Humane Letters, from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, and was appointed as the first recipient of the Nirit and Michael Shaoul Fellowship to the Institute of Advanced Studies at Tel Aviv University. At Maryland, Adele served as director of the Joseph and Rebecca Meyerhoff Center for Jewish Studies, as associate provost for faculty affairs, and as chair of the University Senate. She is the coeditor, with Jeffrey Tigay, of The Posen Library of Jewish Culture and Civilization, Volume 1: Ancient Israel from Its Beginnings through 332 BCE.

Marc Zvi Brettler is a professor of biblical studies at Brandeis University. His research interests include religious metaphors and women in the Bible.
