Tombstone of Mordechai Margaliot
1617
Moses Mordechai Margaliot (d. 1617) was a member of a family descended from the illustrious medieval scholar Rashi. Margaliot served as a rabbi in Kraków. He was buried in the cemetery of the Rema Synagogue, the main burial place for Jews in Kraków until the nineteenth century. His tombstone reflects the style of Ashkenazic tombstones that was first established in Central Europe in the eleventh century. The stones are vertical (as opposed to Sephardic tombstones, which lie flat), are rectangular, and have prominent Hebrew inscriptions.
