Interpolation of the Sokolover Rebbe

Yitsḥak Morganstern

1918

The [Babylonian] Talmud in tractate Sanhedrin [109b] brings a statement that when a stranger came to the city of Sodom, he would be placed on a bed. Someone who was taller than the bed would have his legs cut off, while someone who was shorter than the bed would have his limbs stretched so that he was the same size as the bed. This is a strange statement.

One can say, as is written: And all the substance that was at their feet, etc. (Deuteronomy 11:6) which is understood by the sages [b. Sanhedrin 110a] as referring to a person’s property, “which stands him on his feet.” This was the law in Sodom, that everyone had to be equal in their wealth. That is what is meant by the statement that they cut off his legs, meaning that they took his money so that all would be exactly the same. Learn this carefully.
