Impressions of the Prague Revolution

Although Moritz Hartmann was the grandson of Eleazar Fleckeles, an influential rabbi in Prague, Hartmann abandoned religion as a young man, choosing a career in politics, editing, and creative writing. He was born in Dušnik, Bohemia, and studied philosophy and medicine, spending time in Breslau and Leipzig. During the turbulent political events of 1848, he was elected to the parliament in Frankfurt and affiliated with one of the most radical factions. When the parliament was dissolved, he worked as a journalist in Geneva, Paris, England, Italy, and Stuttgart, ultimately ending up in Vienna, where he served as editor of the Neue Freie Presse. His poetry and journalistic pieces stressed revolutionary themes.
