Hanukkah
Jacob Steinberg
1901
By the window I lit a taper
A Hanukkah candle, gentle child.
Many are the memories
And the memories are brilliant.
A regiment of riders, mighty men,
If they appear before you,
Do not fear, gentle child
And do not close your eyes!
These are the Hasmonaeans
Who will rise from their graves
Every Hanukkah night
To watch over the welfare of their people
[Refrain] By the window . . .
