In 1950, when this photograph was taken, much of London’s East End was in ruins, the result of heavy bombing during World War II. Its glory days as a vibrant Jewish immigrant community were over, and most of its Jewish community had left or were in the process of leaving. Behind the young girl standing on the wet sidewalk is a street with a few market stalls and what looks like an abandoned basket, hinting at the desolation of a once busy and lively neighborhood.
