Born and raised in New York, Ruth Messinger is a political and humanitarian activist who serves as president of the American Jewish World Service. In 1997, she became the first woman to secure the Democratic Party’s nomination for mayor of New York City. She has consistently been named by Forward as one of the 50 most influential Jews of the year.
