Jurek Becker

1937–1997
Born in Poland and a survivor of the Łódź ghetto and concentration camps at Ravensbrück and Sachsenhausen, Jurek Becker wrote novels and film scripts in German. In 1945, he immigrated to East Berlin, where he joined the Socialist Unity party. In 1977, he crossed over to West Berlin. In 1971, Becker won both the Heinrich Mann Prize and the Charles Veillon Prize and, in 1975, he won the National Prize for literature of the German Democratic Republic.
