Creator Bio

André Chouraqui

1917–2007

André Chouraqui was born in Aïn Témouchent, Algeria, to a prominent Sephardic family of jurists and rabbis. He studied law and rabbinics in France, although his education was cut short by World War II. While living in Vichy France in the 1940s, he took part in the French Resistance. In the 1950s, on behalf of the Alliance Israélite, Chouraqui was a major proponent of Francophone Jewish culture in Israel and advised David Ben-Gurion on the integration of Jews from Arab countries into Israel. In addition to his advocacy, Chouraqui wrote widely on spiritual and political problems in Israel.
