Sara Hirsch Guggenheim

1834–1909

At a time when many Jewish authors turned to fiction to argue that Judaism needed to be altered in order to harmonize with modern life, Sara Hirsch Guggenheim’s stories of contemporary Orthodox families emphasized the delights of tradition. The daughter of Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch, the founder of the neo-Orthodox movement, Guggenheim was born in Oldenburg, Germany, and began her literary career by publishing serialized stories in her father’s journal Jeschurun. Written under pseudonyms, Guggenheim’s fiction provided enthusiastic support for Orthodoxy.
