1559–1638

A contemporary of Joseph Karo, Yom Tov Tzahalon also lived in Safed. His rabbinic authority extended beyond his town, and he received questions from different Jewish communities. Tzahalon was also the author of a commentary on the book of Esther, Lekaḥ tov (Good Doctrine), the first book to be printed in the land of Israel, and a commentary on Avot de Rabbi Nathan (Fathers of Rabbi Nathan).
