Yitsḥak Bernfeld

1854–1930

Born Yitsḥak (Isaac) Aaron Bernfeld in Tismenits, Galicia in the Austro-Hungarian Empire (today Tysmenytsia, Ukraine), Yitsḥak Bernfeld taught religious studies in a government school in Stryi. Alongside his work in education, he edited Ha-Mazkir, the Hebrew section of the bilingual Polish-Hebrew newspaper Ojczyzna. He advocated for Jewish integration into Polish society while also promoting the study of the history of Jews in Poland. Bernfeld wrote textbooks and materials in both Yiddish and Hebrew for students wishing to learn Polish.
