Yisroel Berger

1855–1919

Born in Târgu Lăpuș, Transylvania (today in Romania), Yisroel Berger was a gifted Hasidic student and disciple of the Yetev Lev (Yekutiel Judah Teitelbaum, rebbe of Sighet, 1808–1883). After finishing his studies, he served as a community rabbi in Galicia and then in a number of towns in Romania. In 1897, Berger became the chief rabbi of Bucharest, a post he held for the rest of his life. He wrote anthologies of works of the Ba‘al Shem Tov and Sholom Rokeach, the first Belzer rebbe, as well as other compilations of Hasidic teachers, his own commentaries, and homiletic works.
