Yeḥiel Yeḥieli
1866–1937
Born in Slonim (today in Belarus) to a traditional family, Yeḥiel Yeḥieli became a Hebrew teacher after finishing his studies. A Zionist Hebrew educator, Yeḥieli was a member of Ahad Ha-Am’s short-lived B’nai Moshe society and advocated for the ‘Ivrit be-‘ivrit (Hebrew in Hebrew) teaching method. In 1904, he immigrated to Palestine with his wife Yona (Shapira) and started teaching at the Hebrew girls’ school in Jaffa, a post he held for the rest of his life. A founding resident of Tel Aviv, Yeḥieli was active in the literary and educational institutions of the New Yishuv. He published many articles and books on Hebrew educational pedagogy.
