Yaakov Shabtai

1934–1981

Yaakov Shabtai was a prose writer and playwright, born in Tel Aviv. Shabtai was influential in shaping a naturalist, vernacular style in Israeli literature. His book Zikhron devarim (Past Continuous; 1977) is considered a classic of Israeli literature. Many of his books and plays were translated and acclaimed abroad; he also translated English classic plays into Hebrew. Shabtai received the Agnon Prize posthumously.
