Solomon Adahan

b. ca. 1700

Born in Morocco, Solomon ben Masud Adahan (Adhan) was descended from a line of scholars and physicians. He lived in Tāfīālālet and Tetuán, serving as a rabbi and teacher. When his family was captured by local nomadic tribes, Adahan traveled to Europe, first sailing to Gibraltar and then making his way to Amsterdam, to raise funds for their ransom. While in Amsterdam, he printed his original ethical work, Bine’ot deshe’ (In Green Pastures), which also includes laws and stories about Moses and Aaron based on midrashic materials. The work was reprinted a number of times in Eastern Europe in the nineteenth century. Adahan also translated into Spanish a work by Solomon Sasportas, Zekher rav (Abundant Memory).
