Shabbetai Sheftel Horowitz

1590–1660

Son of Isaiah ha-Levi Horowitz, Shabbetai Sheftel published rabbinic works that are framed as commentaries on and additions to books by his renowned father and grandfather. Among these were his additions to his grandfather Abraham’s Yesh noḥalin (Some Inherit), printed together with both the original work and glosses by his uncle, Jacob Horowitz; Vave ha-‘amudim (Hooks of the Pillars), printed as an appendix to his father Isaiah’s Shene luḥot ha-brit (Two Tablets of the Covenant); and additions to Abraham’s Emek berakhah (Valley of Blessing). Shabbetai Sheftel also served as rabbi in Fürth, Frankfurt am Main, and Vienna, where he died.
