Samuel Uceda

1545–1604

Samuel Uceda was a kabbalist and head of a yeshiva. He was born in Safed, and although he was one of the first students of the kabbalistic master Isaac Luria (the Ari), he did not write kabbalistic works. Uceda was an enthusiastic preacher, as is reflected in his works. His Midrash Shemu’el (The Midrash of Samuel), which was printed in Venice in 1579, is an important and popular anthology of commentaries on the ethical tractate m. Avot.
