Samuel Isaac Norzi

Mid-16th Century

Originating from the small Jewish community of Senigallia near Ancona, Samuel Isaac Norzi was a contemporary and relative of Netanel Trabotto (Trabotto was also apparently his teacher). The two corresponded concerning the choir’s repetition of words in prayer, which Norzi favored. Norzi had also sent a request to R. Monselice of Ferrara for support, referencing Leone Modena’s 1610 responsum defending a 1605 controversial choir in Ferrara. The ruling that Trabotto issued in November 1645 did not satisfy Norzi.
