Samuel ha-Levi Barazani

ca. 1560–ca. 1630

A rabbi, yeshiva head, and reputed kabbalist, revered by the Jews of Kurdistan, Samuel ben Nathaniel ha-Levi Barazani was active in towns throughout the region, including Barzan, Amadiya, and probably Mosul. Difficult political and financial situations compelled his frequent moves. Barazani maintained ties with rabbis in Safed by means of Kurdistani students who studied in its yeshivas. Barazani’s writings, including piyyutim (liturgical poetry), have survived only in scattered manuscripts.
