Salomon Leonardus Verveer

1813–1876

Salomon Leonardus Verveer was a Dutch artist, born in The Hague, who specialized in townscapes rendered in a romantic style. While he traveled through France and Germany, the cities and villages of his homeland were his primary subjects. Verveer depicted harbor views, river scenes, and occasional genre scenes, as well as Jewish neighborhoods. He received awards in Brussels in 1842 and 1851, and in his native land Verveer was named a knight of the Order of the Netherlands Lion (1863) and was appointed to the Order of the Oak Crown by King William III (1874).
