Royzl bas Joseph Levi

16th Century

We know very little about the widow Royzl Fishl, daughter of R. Joseph Levi. The only available information is found in her rhymed introduction to Moses Shtendl’s Yiddish translation of the Psalms. She encountered this text during a sojourn in Hanover, transcribed it herself, and brought it to Kraków, where she ensured that it was printed. Fishl herself copied, edited, and typeset the text. She may have composed works of her own, although none has survived.
