Robert Borgel

1909–1989

Robert Borgel was born in Tunisia, then a French protectorate, and grew up in a religious family. He obtained his doctorate in maritime law in Paris and returned to practice in Tunis. After the French defeat in June 1940, the anti-Jewish laws of Vichy France were applied in Tunisia. Borgel and his father Moïse, president of the Communauté israélite de Tunis, united the leaders of the community to save Jews from their fate under the Nazis.
