Rabbis of Schwerin

1770s

The rabbis of the community of Schwerin in northern Germany were under governmental pressure to extend the time between death and burial to three days, against the Jewish tradition of swift burial. They wrote to Moses Mendelssohn, whose response, included in this correspondence, helped them to defend the imposed practice. The topic had been a subject of debate between Mendelssohn and Jacob Emden.
