Paul Ghez
1898–1971
Paul Ghez was born in Sousse, Tunisia. During World War I, he was wounded while serving as a volunteer in a French artillery unit. After studying law in France, he returned to Tunisia, where he served on the Jewish council and headed the veterans’ organization Les anciens combattants. Ghez volunteered again for the French army during World War II. In 1942–1943, when Tunisia was occupied by the Nazis, he was head of the Committee for the Recruitment of Jewish Manpower established by the Jewish leadership to meet Gestapo demands. In 1956, when Tunisia gained independence, Ghez moved to Lyon.
