Moyshe Altman
1890–1981
A Yiddish writer, journalist, and playwright, Moyshe Altman was born in Lipkan, Bessarabia, received his education in traditional Jewish and Russian schools, and worked for the Yiddish Culture Federation of Romania. He spent time in Argentina and then moved to Bucharest and Kishinev. He spent the years of World War II in Central Asia and was arrested in 1949 for his Zionist activities. Returning to Chernivtsi in 1955, Altman continued to write in Yiddish throughout his life.
