Moshe Greenberg

1928–2010

Moshe Greenberg, born in a Hebrew-speaking home in Philadelphia, was, like his father Simon Greenberg, ordained as a Conservative rabbi. Greenberg became a leading American Jewish biblical scholar and was among the first non-Christian scholars to teach the Bible at a secular university. Greenberg received his doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania in 1954, subsequently teaching there for nearly two decades. His historical-critical approach drew on his rich knowledge of ancient languages. In 1970, Greenberg immigrated to Israel, where he taught at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem until 1996.
