Moses Alsheikh
ca. 1520–1593
Moses Alsheikh was born in Edirne, Turkey, and lived most of his life in Safed. He was a student of Joseph Karo and one of the few to receive the traditional ancient ordination (semikhah), revived by Jacob Berab. Alsheikh was head of a yeshiva and served on a rabbinic court. He was a popular preacher, and parts of his homilies appear in his biblical exegesis. Torat Moshe (The Law of Moses) is a commentary on the Torah. It was published during his stay in Istanbul around 1593.
