Judah Leyb Zelichover

1601/11–1640

Judah Leyb ben Moses Minden Zelichover lived in Altona and Hamburg and served as cantor in Aptrud and Minden. His Shire Yehudah (The Songs of Judah), a Sabbath songbook in Hebrew and Yiddish, includes customs and extensive information on contemporary religious practices, including his criticism of cantors who performed theatrically. He longed instead for an older style.
