Joshua Benveniste

1590–1668

Joshua Benveniste was a physician and poet from Istanbul, where he studied at the yeshiva headed by Joseph ben Moses mi-Trani (Maharit, 1569–1639). Benveniste served as rabbi for one of Istanbul’s Jewish congregations before moving to Bursa, where he spent the rest of his life. Benveniste’s works include Perek be-shir (Treatise on Poetry) on prosody and meter; She‘ar Yehoshu‘a (The Gate of Joshua), a responsa collection; and Sadeh Yehoshu‘a (The Field of Joshua), a commentary on the Jerusalem Talmud.
