Joseph Katzabi

d. 1696 or 1698

Joseph ben Nissim Katzabi studied in Salonika and acted as a rabbinic judge there for some time. He was later appointed chief rabbi of Istanbul. Katzabi was greatly respected for his legal knowledge, and some of his rulings were regarded as liberal. His responsa, which his grandson later published in a volume together with Katzabi’s sermons, contain fascinating insights into Katzabi’s time and surroundings.
