Jonah Landsofer

1678–1712

Jonah Landsofer was a professional Torah scribe from Prague, like his father and grandfather before him; the name Landsofer refers to the scribal trade (“sofer”). Landsofer wrote responsa as well as talmudic and halakhic glosses, and Bene Yonah (The Sons of Jonah), on the laws of writing a Torah scroll. He was a student of Abraham Broda, who reportedly sent him to Vienna, along with Moses ḥasid, to dispute Sabbateans.
