J. Levitt

19th–20th Century

Very little is known about J. (or perhaps Y.) Levitt, a member of Los Angeles Branch 148 of the Workmen’s Circle (Arbeter Ring; now Workers’ Circle). The “Marseillaise” to which it refers is not the French national anthem but the Yiddish anthem of the Workmen’s Circle, written by A. Liessin in 1916.
