Israel Perlow
Born in Stolin, near Pinsk in the Russian Empire (today in Belarus), Israel Joseph Perlow (Perlov) was appointed leader of the Karliner Hasidim at age four. Given the nickname the “Yenuka fun Stolin” (child tsadik of Stolin), Perlow went on to become a well-respected and influential leader. He was adamantly opposed to the reformed heder and modern Jewish schools that integrated secular studies and modern-style religious learning, which he explains in his 1911 “Letter on Education” to his Hasidim in Turov (today in Belarus). While not overtly endorsing Zionism, he did support his followers settling in the land of Israel. He is buried in Frankfurt.
