Isaiah Horowitz
1565–1630
Hailing from one of the most famous families in Eastern Europe, Isaiah Horowitz was recognized as the greatest scholar among them. He was born in Prague but spent time in Dubno, Ostróg, and Frankfurt am Main. In 1614, the Jews were expelled from Frankfurt, and Horowitz moved back to Prague. In 1621, he moved to Jerusalem and later to Tiberias, where he died. His book Shene luḥot ha-brit (Two Tablets of the Covenant) is an encyclopedic ethical work, following the medieval tradition, incorporating kabbalistic ideas into everyday activities.
