Isaak Herzberg

1857–1936

Born in Aurich, Prussia (Germany), Isaak Herzberg received his professional education at the Hanover Jewish teacher’s college. After working as an educator, prayer leader, and later editor of the journal Israelitschen Bote, Herzberg moved to Hohensalza (today Inowrocław, Poland) in Posen province around 1885. There he edited a German daily and dedicated himself to chronicling Posen’s Jewish history, working alongside Rabbi Aron Heppner to gather the histories of all 130 Jewish communities in the region. Beyond his career in journalism and his work chronicling Jewish life in Posen, Herzberg advocated for literature specifically for Jewish children; he himself wrote several well-received children’s books and some pedagogical works.
