Hillel Bavli
1893–1961
The American Hebrew poet Hillel Bavli was born in Lithuania and arrived in the United States in 1912. He received both a traditional religious education and a modern maskilic education. In the United States, he taught Hebrew in several cities on the East Coast. In 1917, he began teaching Hebrew language and literature at the Teachers Institute of the Jewish Theological Seminary, where he remained until his death. He was a central participant in the major Hebraist projects in the United States and worked to create bridges with Hebrew writers in the Land of Israel. He was known in particular for his lyric poetry.
